Summer Car Prep Checklist: Stay Cool on the Road

Prepare your car for summer heat with simple maintenance steps that help prevent breakdowns, battery failure, and AC trouble.

Summer heat is brutal. Your car feels it more than you do.

Why Summer Beats Up Your Car

Summer heat = triple-digit heat under the hood. That heat:

  • Shrinks battery life (3 years max here)
  • Boils ATF in transmissions
  • Strains cooling systems
  • Melts hose connectors

Your Summer Prep Checklist

1. Battery Test

If your battery is 3+ years old, test it NOW. Heat kills batteries fast.

Ideal time to replace: Before the 100°F days hit.

2. Coolant Flush

Coolant breaks down over time. If it's never been flushed (5+ years), do it before summer.

Red flag: Coolant looks rusty or milky.

3. Check AC

Turn it on MAX cold. If it's not frosty by the time you're at the first stop, get it checked.

Common issue: Low refrigerant. A $150 refill beats a $1,500 compressor replacement.

4. Inspect Belts & Hoses

Heat makes rubber crack. Look for:

  • Cracks in belts
  • Bulging hoses
  • Leaks where you park

5. Tire Pressure

Heat = expanded air = overinflated tires. Check when COLD, not after driving.

Right PSI: Check your door jamb sticker, not the tire sidewall.

6. Wiper Blades

Summer sun brutalizes wiper blades. If they're streaking, replace. Don't wait for the first rain.

The One Thing Most People Forget

Park in shade when you can. Every degree cooler extends battery life, keeps your dash from cracking, and makes getting in less miserable.
