Two of the most confusing parts under your hood. Two completely different jobs. Let's clear this up.
The Simple Analogy
Think of your car like a body:
- Starter = The muscles that jumpstart your heart
- Alternator = The heart that keeps blood pumping
Simple, right?
What a Starter Does
The starter is a powerful electric motor that cranks your engine when you turn the key. It does ONE big job: get the engine spinning.
Once the engine catches, the starter's job is done. It sits there doing nothing until next time you start the car.
Signs of a bad starter:
- Clicking when turning the key (but no cranking)
- Single click, nothing else
- Gotta "wiggle" the key to start
- Engine won't crank at all
What an Alternator Does
The alternator is a generator that keeps your battery charged AND powers all electrical systems while you drive. Without it, you'd run on battery alone—and die after 20 miles.
Signs of a bad alternator:
- Dead battery (even after replacement!)
- Dashboard "ALT" or "GEN" light
- Dim headlights (especially at idle)
- Car stalls at stoplights
- Electrical weirdness (windows slow, radio acts up)
The $180 Fix That Saved Thousands
One customer came to us: "My car stalls at every red light."
Diagnosis: Bad alternator. Replacement: $220. What they avoided: A $2,000 transmission tow + hotel + rental car bill. Stalling at stoplights is your car telling you the charging system is failing.
