That sound. It's the first thing people notice. Here's what's really going on.
The Good NEWS: It's Normal
New Brake Pad Break-In
New pads need ~500 miles to seat against rotors. Some noise is normal—the rotors are essentially sanding themselves into the pads.
What to do: Nothing. Give it 500 miles.
Low Dust
Some pads are just designed to be quieter. If you're using premium ceramic pads, they might be naturally quieter.
The Warning Signs
Squeal ALL the Time
This is the indicator tab. Most pads have a thin metal piece that contacts the rotor when pads are worn to 3/32".
What it means: Time for new pads. The squeal is your warning.
Cost: $149labor for pads. Don't wait—if you hear this, pads are worn.
Grinding/Scraping
This is the backing plate contacting the rotor. You're now damaging the rotor.
What it means: You need pads AND potentially a rotor resurface or replacement.
Cost: $149-219 labor + parts
Vibration in Pedal
When you brake, the pedal vibrates or pulses. This is usually warped rotors.
What it means: Glazed or warped rotors. Resurfacing might fix it, but new rotors may be needed.
Car Pulls One Way
If your car pulls left or right when braking, you might have:
- Stuck caliper
- Uneven pad wear
- Contaminated brake fluid
What it means: Get it inspected. This is a safety issue.
How to Tell It's Fixed
When you brake, you should feel:
- Smooth, even stopping
- No vibration
- No noise
- Car stays straight
